It might be a cliché to talk about the *natural* melancholy in Scandinavian pop, but there does seem to be something elemental to the way Danish singer-songwriter Majke Voss Romme pulls at the heartstrings. With all the beaten-down strength of Sharon Van Etten and the disarming softness of Feist, her voice resonates directly up your spine. Add the pared down spaciousness of the piano and string arrangements on the few tracks released ahead of her 2014 debut’s release in April, and her longing and heartbreak really do echo through the mountains. To tumble down the rabbit hole that is Bobby Krlic’s bold sonic creations is to travel to the heart of darkness, for they are conceived as the soundtrack to death itself. Unsettling, cold, and full of muted, queasy rhythms – this is just listening to the records – his work takes on a physical dimension live, ebbing and flowing around peaks that are both ear piercingly shrill yet bone-shakingly low. Music is rarely so demanding, or so utterly enveloping, and it’s an absolute thrill. (bij Best Kept Secret HQ)
One of Holland’s finest and most prolific indie-folk outfits, I Am Oak started off as a one-man project helmed by Utrecht-based multi-talent Thijs Kuijken. The band has since grown into a fully fledged four-piece and their subdued but powerful songs have a uniquely timeless quality. Their latest album ‘Ols Songd’ is a re-recording of material previously released by Thijs as a solo singer/songwriter. The frontman’s explanation, “These are old songs now, but they where old songs then”, exemplifies his music’s ability to transcend old and new. (bij Best Kept Secret HQ)
Since his universally acclaimed ‘Dagger Paths’ EP in 2010, Liverpudlian Matthew Barnes’ music has been often described (fervently) in terms of space. But even imagining the producer as a sonic architect – in keeping with other Tri Angle artists’ often ominous constructions of noise – is if anything inadequate to convey the organic depth of Forest Swords. His debut full-length ‘Engravings’ ranked highly across numerous end-of-year lists in 2013 not only for its scale but for the simmering intricacies behind every masterfully evocative sample that made it so compulsively re-listenable. At #BKS14 we’ll introduce a 5th stage. After lengthy brainstorm sessions we’ve decided to name it FIVE. At FIVE a lot of upcoming and exciting bands will perform. First new confirmations for FIVE are The Haxan Cloak and Dutch indie-folk heroes I Am Oak.
We’ll release the full timetable for all five stages next week. (bij Best Kept Secret HQ)
